Gas price low now, but soon to rise

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Gas prices have dropped 25 cents in North Carolina in the past month, and Charlotte-area drivers have noticed.

Tony Brock said he goes to the Quik Trip off Monroe Road in Matthews because the station sells regular gas at $1.87 per gallon.

"Prices are wonderful right now, absolutely," said Brock.

It wasn't the only station that caught driver's attention Tuesday. Down the street, the Shell station off West John Street had regular gas at a $1.89 per gallon. The Costco off Matthews Township Parkway was selling gas at a $1.88 per gallon.

Bill Schachter said, "Usually I would go to Costco but they closed today."

On Tuesday, we found dozens of stations within 10 minutes of uptown selling regular gas for under $2 a gallon. Most stations were below the national average, which sits at $2.26 per gallon.

AAA analysts said the low prices are a result of weakness in the stock market and concerns over global crude oversupply. Experts say prices will likely go up soon.

To boost the market, OPEC plans to cut oil production by 1.2 million gallons a day starting next week.
