Gaston County animal shelter halts intake as virus spreads among cats, dogs

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — The Gaston County animal shelter has suspended animal intake Wednesday as cases of canine and feline panleukopenia spread through the population, officials with Gaston County Police Animal Care and Enforcement said.

The spread of the highly contagious virus is isolated to areas of the shelter.

The exposed cats and dogs are being isolated and monitored closely for clinical signs of the virus.

The shelter remains open to the public for adoptions of its healthy animals.
