Gov. Cooper touts $175M economic impact of Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow

CHARLOTTE — Gov. Roy Cooper came to Quail Hollow Club for the start of the Presidents Cup and used the occasion to tout North Carolina’s role as a golf tourism site as well as home to men’s and women’s professional tournaments and championships.

Cooper spoke with reporters in the media center before attending the opening ceremonies. “This is an amazing event that’s going to attract people from all over the world,” he said. “It’s going to put the city of Charlotte and North Carolina in an international showcase. I’m glad to be here.”

Cooper’s office released a projected Presidents Cup economic impact of $175 million Thursday. In 2017, when Quail Hollow staged the PGA Championship, the PGA of America and the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority calculated organizer and visitor spending to be $100 million, or $121 million adjusted for inflation.

He pointed to the state’s 500-plus golf courses and a 2017 study that found golf-related activities generated direct spending of $2.3 billion ($2.78 billion adjusted for inflation) as examples of the sport’s importance to North Carolina.
