Group approved to make Bibles available at local middle school, district says

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — There are mixed opinions about a group that is making Bibles available at a Caldwell County middle school.

Officials with the Caldwell County Schools district said the Gideons are approved to make the material available at Gamewell Middle School but cannot hand them out directly to students.

The district’s policy said the Gideons can be on display like on a table but not passed out to students.

“It wasn’t a choice,” parent Brian Davis said. “They were just put in their hands. As they left the building, they were just handed to each student.”

Davis said he is a born-again Christian and a strong believer in the Bible, but doesn’t believe it should be handed out at school.

Some parents didn’t have a problem with it.

“If they want to take it, they can take it and get rid of it they can,” parent Cheryl Sparks said.

The Caldwell County Schools district provided a statement, which read, “The Gideons are approved to provide Bibles to middle school grades. They are not allowed to solicit, proselytize or even invite, but the Bibles are on display for about an hour for students to pick up if they would like one.”
