Charlotte man dies days after getting severely hurt in crash in Texas

HOUSTON, Texas — Steve Finch, a man from Charlotte and known in the architecture community, was in a horrible accident in Texas last Wednesday and died days later in the hospital.

Channel 9's sister station in Houston covered the crash.

Family said Finch was doing work on the other side of a fence when a blue tractor-trailer cab rammed into it. The crash killed its driver and severely hurt Finch.

Finch's ex-wife, Toni Marie Finch, said it's hard to believe this fun and caring man who loved being around friends was in the hospital.

"Heartbroken, to say the least," she said. "It's really puts things into perspective. You realize how short life can be and that every day you have on this earth is a gift, and you should be thankful for that."

Toni Marie Finch said Steve Finch's sister and mother were in Houston trying to be positive.

She said his legs were in rough shape after the crash and he underwent surgery last week.

He died Tuesday at the hospital.

Toni Marie Finch said she met Steve Finch at UNC Charlotte. She said he was studying architecture. She said he made Charlotte his permanent home after he graduated in the early 2000s.

In 2017, Channel 9's partners at the Charlotte Business Journal recognized Steve Finch in their issue of 40 under 40. It highlights professionals in Charlotte who are making strides in their career and having a positive impact in the community.

"He's done some great things in the architecture world and has been recognized for it and deserving of that," Toni Marie Finch said.
