High school student charged after loaded gun found on campus

KERSHAW, S.C. — Two Andrew Jackson High School students will likely be expelled after deputies in Lancaster County said one brought a loaded gun to class and passed it to the other.

School officials told Channel 9 that the weapon was a loaded .380 semi-automatic pistol and that a teacher discovered it was in the classroom Monday and called the principal.

The principal of Andrew Jackson High School told the school resource officer shortly after noon on Monday that Devin D’Ante Wright, age 17, of Heath Springs,  had been seen with a pistol inside the school earlier in the day.

Wright, a student at the school, was taken to the office, but the pistol was not located.

The principal later got additional information about the location of the pistol, and it was found in the book bag of another student.

A glass jar with less than 1 ounce of what seemed to be marijuana was with the pistol.

Both were in a zippered case within the other student’s book bag.

Two Drug Task Force agents responded to the school to assist with the investigation.

Wright put the items into the other student’s book bag before he was taken to the office and questioned about the pistol, investigators said.

No charges have been made against the student who had the book bag with the pistol inside.

Officials said there were no threats made against the school or any other students. Parents were notified Monday night through an automated phone call.

The incident happened on the same day extra deputies were at Indian Land High School because of a threat of a shooting written on a bathroom wall. Fortunately, the day was quiet.

Wright was charged with carrying a weapon on school property and simple possession of marijuana.  His bond was set at $2,500 on the weapons charge.
