Hornets president focuses on team's 30th season, future events at Spectrum Center

Charlotte Hornets team president Fred Whitfield is the lead executive over the Hornets and the Spectrum Center, and he said his focus this season included everything from NBA and college basketball events to honoring the team’s history and its players in its 30th season.

He is also planning major events, including the NBA All-Star weekend in February.

“It's nonstop,” Whitfield said. “I think last week there were 100 or so people here from the NBA from different departments to work on logistics.”

He said hosting the Democratic National Convention in 2012 put the Queen City on the map.

NBA All-Star Weekend -- which is from Feb. 15 to 17 -- could bring in $100 million.

The CIAA Tournament -- which starts on Feb. 25 and runs through March 2 -- has previously brought in $50 million.

“This (Spectrum Center) is the city's building and we're just the stewards of it and we take that obligation very seriously because it should be a huge economic stimulator for our region,” Whitfield said.
