How luxury car dealers in Charlotte are handling fast sales pace

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A cruise down Tryon Street or Sharon Road looks a little more like Miami Beach lately, as Charlotte’s luxury car dealers experience a surge in demand for exotic cars.

The pandemic has created what Bloomberg has called a “post-war boom” for luxury carmakers and the dealers that sell them.

According to Bloomberg, luxury automakers are normally reticent to reveal how many cars they sell and at what profit. But it’s clear they did well in 2020.

British carmaker Bentley delivered 11,206 vehicles in 2020, the highest output in its 101-year history. Bugatti’s CEO said 2020 was the company’s third record-breaking year in a row. Porsche announced revenue at an all-time high.

In Charlotte, the McLaren dealership was the British automaker’s top dealership in the world in 2020.

“The most common thing I hear, and I’ve been in this field for 40 years, is that we’ve never seen the car business like this,” says Bob Pletcher, general manager of Foreign Cars Charlotte. The dealership sells Bentley, Maserati, Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin. “We don’t know when it’s going to end. We are very blessed.”
