‘I heard gunfire': 911 calls released from deadly Steak ‘n Shake shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Authorities released 911 calls Tuesday related to the attempted robbery July 9 at the Steak ‘n Shake on South Boulevard in which a cook was shot to death and a customer was seriously injured.

“I heard gunfire, pow, pow, pow,” said a man, who was at a nearby gas station.

He told the dispatcher, “He came in with a mask on and started shooting.”

He told 911 he heard about four shots.

Employees and customers ran to the Circle K to escape the masked gunman.

“All the employees are coming out of the woodwork,” the 911 caller said.

“Five or six shots fired, and people running everywhere,” another caller said.

He wore all black, the caller said.

Another caller said she pulled into the parking lot when the shooting happened.

The female caller described the chaos and said she saw a woman and children run to a grassy area away from the restaurant.

“She had her kids, crouched down,” the caller said.

Steak ‘n Shake employee Darnell Harris, 48, was protecting his co-workers when he was shot and killed, witnesses said.
