Injured Green Beret gets service dog

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A local group is helping make life a little easier for a soldier injured in Afghanistan.

Billy Costello is a U.S. Army Green Beret who lost one of his legs when a roadside bomb exploded while he was on patrol.

He got the dog when it was just 10 weeks old hoping it would be his service dog.

The Charlotte organization The Dog Knowledge has trained the dog to help Costello live a better life.

"He's been trained to do everything from retrieving my prosthetic leg to opening cabinets, shutting doors, retrieving keys and turning off lights," Costello said.

Costello took the dog home Friday night to Fort Bragg.
