Is Panthers training camp future in Spartanburg in jeopardy?

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Panthers fans are slowly coming to terms with the fact that the team may not practice at Wofford College after the contract is up next summer.

Bunker Hill, who traveled to Spartanburg, South Carolina from Matthews, said he has attended Panthers training camp for more than 20 years.

He said it’s not that fans are worried about a change in training camp locations, but are definitely interested.

Hill has collected hundreds of signatures at training camp.

“So, I just get their autographs on cards and keep them by year,” he said.

Hill said he doesn’t know what's planned for the future of training camp at Wofford College, and he’s not alone.

“They've just put a lot of work and money into this thing and I hope (Panthers' owner) Mr. (David) Tepper kind of considers everything that's gone on here,” Hill said.

New owner Tepper has also put a lot of money into the Panthers, buying the franchise for more than $2 billion.

He's already said a new practice facility will be a priority but hasn’t said where that will be or if the team will have training camp there.

“It's just always been here,” Panthers fan Michael Tollison said. “Something's been here for such a long time. It's kind of tradition for the area.”

According to the Spartanburg Chamber of Commerce, last year’s training camp brought in more than $13 million, almost three times the revenue from 2014.

“It doesn't matter. We'll go wherever it's going to go,” Panthers fan Eddie Brown said. “They can take it to Indianapolis, we'll be there.”

The contract with Wofford College lasts until 2019.
