‘It’s such a blessing’: Food pantries use community help to feed thousands

CHARLOTTE — As many folks prepare to reunite with family and friends ahead of Thanksgiving, local food pantries are readying to feed thousands of families who face difficulties putting food on the table.

However, shortages, high costs and supply chain disruptions are creating extreme challenges for organizers.

Loaves and Fishes in Charlotte ordered 1,700 turkeys, but is expecting to help more than 2,000 families. A bird shortage has Common Heart delivering hams or turkeys to the 1,500 low-income people it feeds in Union County and beyond.

As scarcities create roadblocks, both food pantries are turning to the community to ensure no one misses out on a meal.

“It’s more than just about Thanksgivings, it’s more than just about food,” said Keith Adams, executive director of Common Heart. “It’s about promoting a small revolution of kindness.”
