Former car dealer faces federal, state criminal charges

FORT MILL, S.C. — A former car dealer who Action 9 has been investigating for months faces both federal and state criminal charges.

Robert McCoy, Jr. owned McCoy Motors in Fort Mill Two finance companies were suing him on allegations that he didn’t pass along a combined $3.2 million in customer payments.

In one of the cases, a federal one, the judge ordered McCoy to "provide copies of all accounting records and bank statements" and to stop "concealing, moving or disposing" of certain assets.

The judge said McCoy did everything in his power "to avoid compliance and circumvent the orders.”

McCoy is charged with federal criminal contempt.

In the meantime, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents arrested McCoy and charged him with nine counts of failure to deliver a certificate of title.

The federal and state charges are misdemeanors.

Action 9 emailed an attorney listed as McCoy's lawyer but hadn't heard back by 2 p.m. Monday.

McCoy eventually closed the dealership.
