Authorities: 19-year-old drowned in Mountain Island Lake

MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. — Gaston County's dive team spent more than two hours searching Mountain Island Lake for a teen who drowned there Tuesday evening. Police said he went under the water around 4:30 p.m., but that his friends didn't call for help until two hours later.

Police received a 911 call about a possible drowning at the lake around 6:30 p.m.

Police said a 19-year-old man and some friends were swimming in a popular swimming hole off of Mountain Island Road near the water treatment plant. They said the teen went under and never surfaced.

Gaston County's dive team found his body just before 8:30 p.m.

Channel 9 spoke to a woman who said she often swims in the area where the teen drowned.

"Where we were always hanging out there aren't any signs and we've never had any trouble there," said Brittany Wallace.

A Gaston County deputy told Channel 9 there's no swimming allowed along the cove where those teens were swimming.

Police will not release the victim's identity until his family is notified.
