Fallen Lancaster County deputy will be laid to rest Monday

LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — A Lancaster County deputy who had served the community for more than 25 years will be laid to rest Monday, nearly a week after collapsing following a training event.

Deputy James Kirk Jr. died at Springs Memorial Hospital last Tuesday after collapsing during a training event at the sheriff’s office firing range. He died from what appears to be a medical condition, Sheriff Barry Faile said.

Kirk served the citizens of Lancaster County for the past 28 years. He began his career at the Lancaster Police Department and retired from that agency after 25 years of service. He joined the sheriff’s office in 2015.

“Deputy Kirk was a true public servant who dedicated his life to the service of others and this community,” Faile said. “Our hearts are heavy as we mourn his loss.”

Kirk was 57 years old.

Funeral services for Kirk will be held at Second Baptist Church, 1426 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, on Monday at 2 p.m.

Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park.
