Local gym holds outdoor classes to help stay in business

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Gyms are having to get creative to stay in business. And for one in Cotswold, that means going outside.

The pandemic has been especially challenging for the Row House because it is a new business, so it’s doing what it can to survive.

After months of home workouts, Mike Utsey said he was happy to be back in a class atmosphere.

“I prefer a class nine times out of 10 for sure,” Utsey said.

This wasn’t quite the traditional class. It was outside -- but there’s music, an instructor and classmates for motivation.

“Obviously, we’ve been locked in the house quite a bit, so we just wanted to get out. Get some fresh air,” he said.

Getting to a group fitness class hasn’t been an option in five months, as gyms had to close their doors. But the Row House never even got the chance to open.

It was getting ready to open earlier this year before the pandemic. As a brand-new business owner, Cindy Bickman said she didn’t qualify for any relief.

“I’ve been struggling. Its been really, really hard,” Bickman said.

She decided to try hosting a small class outdoors. Since outdoor workouts are permitted under Phase 2, it’s something other gyms are doing as well.

“Outdoors was pretty much the only option,” she said. “We couldn’t believe the turnout. People really wanted to get out and start exercising.”

Working out in Carolina’s August heat is something Bickman said people have to be careful with. People should make sure they are limiting their time in the heat.

“I love this. I thought it was a good option,” Utsey said.

The Row House never officially opened indoors before the pandemic hit. It’s hoping to open soon after Phase 3 starts.
