CHARLOTTE — Girl Tribe Co. is having an existential crisis — and doubt has crept in for owners Sarah Baucom and Carrie Barker.

The Charlotte brand was founded in 2014 with a $200 investment and just 48 T-shirts to sell. It garnered a following for its clothing lines, pop-up events and focus on empowering women and creating community.

But behind the scenes, the owners say the honeymoon phase of growing a small business is over. Some of that change is driven by their own personal lives. They launched Girl Tribe at age 29. Today, it’s a balancing act of juggling family, business and life’s responsibilities.

“I think there’s a reality that set in of how risky a small business really is,” Baucom says. “We’ve been really scared to move, so we’ve become indecisive.”
