Local students learn about election process, vote in mock election

GASTONIA, N.C. — Students at Ridgeview Charter School are too young to vote in an official election, but they’re old enough to know why voting is important.

On Monday, the school’s gym was converted into a polling center where more than 200 students got to cast their ballots for President of the United States.

Third grade teacher Jessica Dunlap said the students have been learning about the election process, the candidates and some of the issues, including taxes and the environment.

Older students learned about the governor and senate races as well.

“I’m excited to vote because I just want to vote for somebody that would be good for our country,” third grader Ri’yan Salder said.

Dunlap hopes the experience helps students realize that they have a choice and a voice.

“It’s important for them to understand not just what’s in the book, but know what’s going on in your community, in your state and in your country so that you can advocate for yourself and others around you in your community,” she said.
