Local woman shares how her mother was a pioneer in turning Juneteenth into national holiday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An author and social activist spent years working to get Juneteenth to become a national holiday.

Lula Briggs Galloway lived in Michigan and made it her passion. Her daughter, Kim Greenwood-Roundtree, lives in Charlotte, and said her mother died in 2008.

“I know she would be happy and excited. I don’t know if she would be finished though, because it’s not enough. I can hear her say that,” Greenwood-Roundtree said.

>> In the video at the top of the page, Channel 9′s Glenn Counts spoke with Greenwood-Roundtree about seeing her mother’s dream become a reality.
