CHARLOTTE — A malfunctioning toilet forced the evacuation of a building at South Mecklenburg High School Wednesday.
Charlotte Fire Department officials said they were called to the school for a report of a hazardous materials situation and students complaining of irritated eyes.
Pictures from Chopper 9 showed fire trucks and crime scene tape being put up around a building.
After investigating, firefighters said a toilet was backed up. When school workers cleared the blockage, a significant amount of sewage gas was released, causing the problem.
Some students were treated at the scene, but no one was taken to the hospital.
