Man accused in UNCC sex assault to appear in court

A man will be in court Monday accused of sexually assaulting a UNC Charlotte student in her dorm room.

School official told Channel 9 student safety is a priority. Blue lights around campus point out where students can call campus police.

But police say the victim never had a chance to call them because she was sleeping at the time of the attack.

Police told Channel 9 the victim’s roommate invited the suspect, Damien Pruitt, 21, into a dorm room Thursday night.

Later that night, police said Pruitt climbed into bed with one of the student’s roommates and tried to sexually assault her.

Police said Pruitt is not a student at UNC Charlotte. He is still in jail charged with sexual battery.

Channel 9 looked in Pruitt’s criminal history where records show he has been in trouble three times for underage drinking and stealing.

Channel 9 will have a crew at the court and will bring you the latest developments starting at 5 p.m.
