Man arrested, charged in sexual assault in 1994

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit have charged Kirk Deanglo Evans, 50, in a sexual assault that occurred in 1994.

On Feb. 15, 1994, police say, a woman was walking along Beatties Ford Road when Evans approached her and forced her into a vehicle.

Evans then drove to a location on Mount Holly-Huntersville Road where he sexually assaulted and robbed the victim, according to police. He then released the victim and she contacted authorities, police said.  Detectives went to the scene to investigate, but were unable to identify a suspect at that time.

In late 2013, detectives with the CMPD Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit were able to re-examine the evidence from the case and submit the DNA to a lab.

The lab reported the DNA evidence submitted matched that of Evans.  Warrants were obtained and Evans was arrested by officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's North Division without incident in the 900 block of Grass Hollow Road on Tuesday morning.

Evans was taken to police headquarters and interviewed by detectives.

Evans was charged with first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
