Man charged after report of puppy with ears cut off

STATESVILLE, N.C. — A man was arrested on charges of animal cruelty, according to Statesville Police Department.
 
Iredell County Animal Services reported a call on June 15 that a pit bull puppy had been neglected and had its ears cut off.
 
Alvertis James Hughes, 17, was arrested Wednesday. He was charged with felony animal cruelty because the puppy's ears were cut off. He also was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty for failing to provide adequate care and sustenance for the pup.
 
Hughes was taken before a magistrate and was given a $5,000 secured bond.  His court appearance was set for July 29.
