Woman arrested in connection with kidnapping from Concord gas station

CONCORD, N.C. — A woman was arrested in Virginia in connection with the kidnapping and sexual assault of a woman at a Concord gas station last week, officials said.

Police said Laura Flemming was arrested in Pulaski, Virginia, where she was awaiting extradition proceedings at New River Valley Regional Jail before returning to North Carolina.

Flemming, of Archdale, was wanted for first-degree kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Two days after a sexual assault stemming from a kidnapping at a Concord QuikTrip, police obtained warrants for Flemming, an acquaintance of a man already charged in the crime.

Reporter Glenn Counts spoke with neighbors Wednesday, the day after Concord police charged Dustin Bowman, who they said forced a woman into her car at the gas station, held her against her will, and sexually assaulted her.

"Well, to be honest with you, I thought it was a drug bust," neighbor Ronald Riggs said.

He watched Archdale police arrest Bowman, a registered sex offender, who was charged with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree forcible sex offense and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Riggs said he did not have much interaction with Bowman.

Police said they received a call from the Archdale Police Department around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday about a 46-year-old woman who had been carjacked from a gas station in Concord.

After reviewing surveillance video, police said the evidence revealed Bowman forced the victim into her car at the QuikTrip on George W. Liles Parkway and started driving. Flemming was also in the car.

Police said the suspects drove the victim north on Interstate 85 and left her with her vehicle in Archdale.

They said Bowman sexually assaulted the victim during the drive.

Police said Bowman and Flemming were involved in an accident around 11 p.m. Monday and were dropped off at the QuikTrip by a wrecker around midnight.

Police said the crime occurred at the gas station around 3 a.m.

Bowman was arrested at his home in Archdale around 5 p.m.

"It just proves these types of things can happen in the nicest of places," said Lurie Urban, a shopper at the QT.

Brian Adinolfe has been the owner of Dough, a bake shop, for the seven years.

"So, the fact it happened when it did, I'll be more and concerned and cautious," Adinolfe said.

Bowman was convicted in 2009 for attempted rape or sex offense.

Bowman was placed in the Cabarrus County Jail. He appeared in court Wednesday, where he was given an attorney.

A probable cause hearing was set for Aug. 1.
