• Man struck, killed by tree limb ID'd

    GASTON COUNTY, N.C. - The owner of a Gaston County golf course was killed after he was struck by a tree limb Tuesday afternoon.

    The victim was identified as Joe Herman Ratchford, 63.

    The accident occurred on the Apple Creek golf course on Apple Creek Road in Dallas.

    Officials said a large tree had fallen to the ground in an awkward position.

    Ratchford was working to remove the tree when a part of it struck him in the head.

    Chopper 9 flew over the scene where officials could be seen investigating.
