Man mistakes paintball gun for rifle, shoots woman in Statesville

STATESVILLE, N.C. — A woman was injured in a shooting Friday night in Statesville when a man thought she was holding a semiautomatic rifle during an altercation, police said.

Officers said 19-year-old Marissa Evans was shot by 19-year-old Trenton Martin just before midnight outside of a home on Wilson W. Lee Boulevard.

Investigators said that Martin was invited to the home when he was met outside by Evans and a juvenile male.

Evans was carrying what appeared to be rifle, which ended up being a paintball gun, police said.

After an altercation, Martin told police he thought his life was threatened, so he fired two rounds.

Police said Martin is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, while Evans and the juvenile were charged with felony obstruction of justice for providing a false report to the investigators concerning the incident.

Evans and the juvenile were jailed under a $25,000 secured bond.

Officers are still investigating the incident.
