Man pleads guilty to deadly hit-and-run, sentenced to 6 months

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Donivan Winters pleaded guilty Thursday to felony death by vehicle after a hit-and-run wreck in August in west Charlotte. He was sentenced to six months in jail.

Winters was drunk that morning when Nefertiti Foust, 53, was killed on the Brookshire Freeway, police said.

His attorney said Thursday that Winters wanted to take responsibility for what he'd done.

Winters' mother stood up in court, fought back tears and turned to the sisters of the man he killed and told them she shares their pain.

“Please know, we pray for you guys daily,” the mother said. “We know that this has impacted both of our families so dramatically. We understand that and we are so, so sorry.”

Winters also offered an apology.

“I would like to deeply apologize to the family,” Winters said. “If I could go back to that night, I would take his place easily. I deeply apologize. I'm so sorry.”

After his hearing was over, Foust's sister said his apology helped, but six months is not long enough.

“And I don't blame the family,” the sister said. “I understand they're probably going through it too but my family is very, very hurt -- very hurt.”
