Man thanks Charlotte firefighters who saved his life

CHARLOTTE, NC — James Scott had an emotional reunion Thursday with the Charlotte firefighters who saved his life.

They found him unconscious inside his home on Crestdale Drive around 6 a.m. May 13. He was carried out of the burning building and taken to the hospital.

Fire officials said firefighters arrived at the home four minutes after the 911 call.

"The fire room was on the left, he was in the back room,” said Adrian Turner, who was one of the firefighter who pulled Scott out of the home. “He looked like he was on his way out, looked like he was 10 to 15 feet from the door."

Scott was released from the hospital Wednesday after treatment for an eye injury and burns to his head and back. He is also on oxygen.

"I'm not out of the woods with my health yet because I can't see you. I can see blurry of you,” Scott said. “I got a gash across this eye, and this one here, I’m totally blind, but I’m still here and I will tell them what God did to me.”

He said he's very grateful for the rescue and the daily support he got from firefighters while he was in the hospital.

"This man here, when he called every day, he called me, I brightened, didn't know who he was, what color he was, didn't know nothing. All I knew is that he was the child of God," said Scott.

Fire investigators ruled the fire accidental and said the fire was caused by an electrical issue.

The fire caused $50,000 worth of damage.

“These guys, from day one of recruit school, train for this situation,” Charlotte Fire Chief Reginal Johnson said.
