Man to serve at least 18 years in prison after killing girlfriend

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man pleaded guilty Thursday to killing his girlfriend in southwest Charlotte while their baby was nearby.

Michael Brown drove to the police station in Steele Creek on May 10 and told officers he shot and killed his girlfriend.

Police went to the apartment on Point South Drive and found 27-year-old Whitney Jo King, who was shot several times.

Prosecutor said the couple had an 8-month-old child together, and officers found the baby unharmed in the apartment.

King’s family was in the courtroom, but they were too devastated to speak.

Brown didn’t say anything, but his attorney offered King’s family an apology.

“Mr. Brown is very, very remorseful in this case from the first time I met him and does wish to send his apologies for what happened here,” attorney Dean Loven said. “He has no excuse for it. It’s something that happened that should not have happened.”

Brown did not say why he shot King.

Brown will spend at least 18 years in prison as part of the plea deal.
