SURF CITY, N.C. — Firefighters are working to determine what caused a massive fire that spread to several homes in a coastal North Carolina town Sunday evening.
Fire officials said they got a call around 6 p.m. about a structure fire involving three homes on Atkinson Road off of South Shore Drive in Surf City.
Crews from Surf City Fire, Topsail Beach Fire, North Topsail Beach Fire, Pender EMS, New Hanover County Fire, Surf City Police and Topsail Police responded to the fire.
Viewer video shows the massive blaze. It shows the homes, several stories high, burning to the ground. Neighbors could only watch as the fire spread from home to home.
At some points, the fire appeared to shoot out like a flamethrower as it moved through the area.

Officials have been on scene since 7 p.m. and are expected to be there through the night and into Monday.
They said they have stopped the progression of the fire, but at least six homes are a total loss.
No injuries have been reported.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
