Police: 1 killed, others hurt in crash involving CATS bus; suspect charged with DWI

CHARLOTTE — A man has been charged after his passenger was killed and three others were hurt in a crash Thursday afternoon in northwest Charlotte, officials said.

The wreck happened after noon along Mount Holly Road near I-485. At the scene, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police found a CATS bus with heavy damage to its front and a Mazda CX-5 SUV with severe damage to its front also.

Police said the driver of the SUV, 22-year-old Derwin Lewis, was heading east on Mount Holly Road and tried to make a left turn onto the ramp for I-485. A CATS bus was driving in the opposite direction on Mount Holly Road.

CMPD said that was when Lewis turned left in front of the bus. The bus, which had the right of way, collided with the SUV.

Lewis was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK. His passenger was seriously hurt in the crash and died at the scene.

Police have not yet released their identity.

According to MEDIC, two other people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The off-ramp onto Mount Holly Road from the outer loop of I-485 was closed while police investigated.

Police said that neither Lewis nor the driver of the bus were speeding, but Lewis was impaired at the time of the crash. He was arrested and taken into custody and charged with DWI, felony death by motor vehicle, and failure to yield right of way.
