MEET MORTY: CMPD introduces first ever cadaver dog

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police introduced its newest member Wednesday: a cadaver dog named Morty.

Morty is an 18-month-old golden retriever who came all the way from Colombia in South America. He is a human remains detection dog that is trained to find blood, bones, teeth, and can event detect a body submerged in water.

In past cases, officers would have to borrow a cadaver dog from a different department. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department decided to get their own while investigating the case of a murdered Uber driver who was found dead in a field in Rock Hill.

Morty completed a 12-week K-9 school with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in February.

"This dog could be used 50 times a year or six times a year. The predictability of it is very difficult," Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Sgt. Kathrine Scheimreif said. "The training will continue. He's already been called out on two different cases."

Morty lives with his handler, crime scene investigator Henry Buhr Jr.

Buhr said that finding remains is a game to Morty. Morty’s reward for a job well-done is his ball, which he loves to play with.
