CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber said Friday afternoon that Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper has put Charlotte in the lead to land the league’s next expansion team. Garber’s remarks follow several months of increasing momentum behind the local bid for an MLS team.
Now, based on what the commissioner said Friday, it’s a matter of months, at most, before Charlotte is added as the 30th MLS team.
“It’s fair to say that Charlotte has done a lot of work to move their bid to the front of the line,” Garber said. “It starts with David Tepper, the owner of the Panthers. Who’s a very passionate guy about sport, very passionate about Charlotte and (who) is reminding us that the league really didn’t see what Atlanta would become. And I would be the first to admit that.”
