More than 13,000 retirees missing many years of pensions from MetLife

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — More than 13,000 retirees are missing pension payments upon which they depend.

MetLife officials said those missing payments go back 25 years.

Officials said the company didn't make a sufficient effort to contact the customers before writing the payments off as undeliverable.

Most of the customers owed money are around 76 years old, meaning they are missing 11 years of benefits.

With each payment around $1,800 a year, the average retiree who is owed money is owed about $20,000 in back payments.

Metlife has a big presence in Charlotte.

The insurer has its retail headquarters in Ballantyne.

In 2015, Metlife officials announced they had created 1,500 jobs in Charlotte.
