CMPD: Neglect led to infant boy's death; mother expected to appear in court

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have charged Chaz Bush, 31, in the death of her infant son. She is expected to appear in court Monday for her arraignment.

Officers responded Tuesday to the 300 block of Harrison Street for a medical call and found an unresponsive 3-month-old boy.

Majestic Kancaid Bush was pronounced dead at the scene.

The infant was neglected, which led to his death, the Medical Examiner’s Office said.

A woman who said she is Bush's mother believes her daughter had serious mental health issues, and she thinks those issues may have played a role in the tragedy.

The woman, who did not want to be identified, said Bush has not been acting like herself.

She also said Bush has five children.

Bush’s neighbors were surprised about the murder charge.

"Only thing she talked about was her kids and how she cared for her kids, so I didn't know her to be a bad mom," neighbor Rosie Woodard said.

In 2010, Bush was charged with a DWI after rear-ending another car with a 3- and 5-year-old in the back seat.

Police said the children were not wearing seat belts and that Bush's blood alcohol was four times the legal limit.

Bush pleaded guilty to DWI and was put on probation.

In addition to the DWI, Bush was arrested in 2014 on a misdemeanor charge for violating the state school attendance law.

Bush was charged with murder and felony child neglect resulting in serious injury, and was booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail.

Bush was appointed a public defender Friday.
