Mother searches for answers 2 years after son's murder outside North Carolina mall

LENOIR, N.C. — A mother from Lenoir is still hoping for answers two years after her son was murdered outside a popular mall in North Carolina.

Wezley Tugman was gunned down at the Four Seasons Town Centre Mall in Greensboro in 2017.

His mother Diane Tugman showed Channel 9 the photos and other memories of her son she proudly displays in the living room of her home. The pictures from his childhood, his time in high school and as an adult have been there since his murder.

“He was just a good person. He always checked on me to see if I needed anything, and he always picked me up at work,” Diane Tugman said.

She said her son had taken his 13-year-old niece to the mall to buy her shoes for her birthday.

Surveillance video shows the two as they walk out of the mall together. Seconds later, someone shot Wezley Tugman in the chest just as he exited the mall. Police still don’t have a motive in the case.

“That’s what goes in my mind. Why, why would anybody do it? Because he would give you anything. He would give you anything you ask. He was just a giving person. Why would somebody kill someone for no reason at all?“ Diane Tugman said.

Channel 9 spoke with police in Greensboro who said the detective who worked the case is no longer with the department. They said the case remains open, and they plan on refocusing their efforts, even going to Lenoir to interview people who knew Wezley Tugman.

His mother hopes they get the lead they need to make an arrest.

“It hurts. I just cry.  All I do is just cry and pray every day. Whoever did this to my child will be convicted, and God will convince his heart to come forward,” Diane Tugman said.

The niece who witnessed the murder told family the killer didn’t take anything, but at one point, got down next to Wezley Tugman, touching him before he ran off.
