Man killed after moped veers off road, hitting tree in north Charlotte, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a deadly moped crash in north Charlotte.

It happened just before 11:30 a.m. Friday, on North Statesville Road at Spector Drive. When officers arrived, they found a damaged moped whose driver, 51-year-old Bobby Collins, was lying off the right side of the road.

MEDIC said Collins died at the scene.

Investigators believe he was driving north on North Statesville Road when he veered off to the right, hitting a tree. Officers did not say what caused him to swerve off the road.

From Chopper 9 Skyzoom, several officers could be seen investigating the crash, which was blocking part of North Statesville Road.

Police said Collins was wearing a Department of Transportation-approved helmet. They don’t believe he was speeding excessively or impaired at the time of the crash, but toxicology results are pending.
