National real estate firm picks Charlotte for coworking debut

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte will be the first market for Camden Property Trust to enter the increasingly competitive coworking field.

Camden, a Houston-based REIT that primarily does work in the apartment industry, will open its inaugural CoWork by Camden in the coming weeks at its Camden Gallery property in South End. The roughly 5,000-square-foot space is in a separate building, at 1710 Camden Road, which Camden purchased in 2016 for $800,000 in addition to the land where Camden Gallery was developed.

“We threw around and brainstormed a lot of ideas of how to use this space,” said Carrie Bolling, Charlotte district manager for Camden Property Trust. “Coworking is just becoming more and more popular and it resonates with our resident base.”

CoWork by Camden includes 21 private offices that can accommodate between one to four people, 20 dedicated desks and flex memberships. The coworking space is open to anyone, though Camden residents get a discount on membership, Bolling said. Camden invested about $3 million in the coworking space.
