NC 7-year-old boy battling leukemia signs with UNC wrestling team

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill had a unique signing day Wednesday for a 7-year-old boy battling leukemia.

With the help of the nonprofit organization IMPACT, Mason Fannin was able to sign with the UNC wrestling team on commitment day, according to our news partners WTVD.

Mason will have the opportunity to go to practices in Chapel Hill, go to wrestling meets, team dinners and other events like the other wrestlers on the team.

Mason's mom, Ashley Fannin, said she spent almost 15 years in pediatric oncology as a nurse. She said in February when Mason started to show symptoms, she knew it was cancer right away.

His family said Mason is doing well and is currently in remission, despite having to undergo chemo treatments.

Head coach Coleman Scott said he and his players are regular visitors at UNC Hospital, and they were excited to connect with Mason.

Since the organization began in 2011, IMPACT has matched nearly 2,000 children with local college athletic teams.
