NC bio-tech company gets approval for rapid coronavirus test

NORTH CAROLINA — A bio-tech company in North Carolina got the FDA’s approval for a rapid COVID-19 test, which is a big deal because many people are waiting several days for their test results.

Biomedomics says the test could have results within minutes.

While the current CDC tests look for the virus’ genetic signature, the new test measures how the patient’s body is reacting to the virus, focusing on the anti-bodies in your immune system.

“It’s fast. It can be done in about 10 or 15 minutes. It can be done at the point of care,” Kent Lupino from Biomedomics said.

The test has an 89 percent accuracy rate. The company says the test isn’t meant to replace current methods, just help the overwhelmed system.

Channel 9 reported many communities are struggling to get enough tests, that includes Mecklenburg County.

Health officials say they are working on fast-tracking tests and getting more out into the communities.
