NCAA cancels South Carolina-North Carolina plan to play exhibition for hurricane relief

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Spectrum Center was expected to be the site for this third exhibition game, which all proceeds would go to hurricane relief. It was approved by Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan. That is no longer the case.

Last season, the NCAA approved several hurricane relief games.

The rule was to allow schools two exhibition games per season.

The University of North Carolina and the University of South Carolina did not want to change their schedules, but instead wanted to add a third exhibition game.

The NCAA denied that request.

Channel 9 attempted to contact the Hornets and the NCAA.

An NCAA representative said the decision to deny the third exhibition game was due to following NCAA guidelines that allow only two exhibition games for each team per season.

The Hornets have not returned Channel 9’s request as of Sunday night.

Two exhibition games to benefit Hurricane Florence relief include:

  • UNC Wilmington versus Clemson on Oct. 27
  • West Virginia versus Pennsylvania State on Nov. 3

Other exhibition games to benefit other relief efforts include:

  • University of Georgia versus University of Alabama Birmingham on Oct. 18
  • University of Nevada Reno versus University of Washington on Oct. 21
  • California State University Bakersfield versus Long Beach State University on Oct. 27
  • Texas Tech University versus New Mexico State University on Oct. 30
