New CMS student advisor says he’s ready to make a change

CHARLOTTE — An East Mecklenburg High School student said he is ready to create change in the Charlotte area.

Juan Torres Muñoz is the new student advisor to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School board, where he has the chance to advocate for his fellow students.

Muñoz said he has a lot of ideas. He told Channel 9 it is important to him that students have a voice in the decisions being made about them.

Muñoz hopes to empower students and make sure they know they can speak up.

“I’m encouraging them to go to CMYC (Charlotte-Mecklenburg Youth Council) meetings; if not they can go to board meetings..and just sharing their feedback. It’s impossible for us to anything if they don’t share,” said Munoz.

Muñoz is a junior in high school who moved to Charlotte with his family from Colombia when he was 12 years old.

>> In the video at the top of the page, Channel 9′s Elsa Gillis talks to Muñoz about that transition, his inspiration for the decision to run for student advisor, and the biggest issues facing CMS.
