New details emerge about redevelopment plans for old mill

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Portman Residential has filed a rezoning petition for the Savona Mill property in west Charlotte.

Plans call for up to 290,000 square feet of commercial space — the bulk of which is in the existing mill — and 650 residential units. Portman Residential acquired the Savona Mill property, bounded by Stewart, Chamberlain and Turner avenues, State Street and Stewart Creek, for $11.5 million last month.

Atlanta-based Portman Residential, an affiliated company of Portman Holdings, will develop residential units at the property, and Portman Holdings will upfit the mill into new office space.
