North Carolina soldier dies in rollover crash in Syria, Department of Defense says

WASHINGTON — A North Carolina soldier was killed Friday in a rollover crash in Syria, the Department of Defense said, WTVD reported.

The Knightdale-based soldier, Spc. Antonio Moore, 22, of Wilmington, died in Deir ez-Zor Province, Syria, officials said.

He was conducting route-clearing operations when the crash happened, the DOD said.

Officials said this was Moore’s first deployment. He enlisted in the Army in May 2017 as a combat engineer.

According to the DOD, Moore was assigned to the 363rd Engineer Battalion, 411th Engineer Brigade in Knightdale.

“The 363rd Engineer Battalion is deeply saddened at the loss of Spc. Antonio Moore,” said Lt. Col. Ian Doiron, 363rd Engineer Battalion commander. “Antonio was one of the best in our formation. He will be missed by all who served with him. We will now focus on supporting his family and honoring his legacy and sacrifice.”

Awards that Moore received include the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

Moore is survived by his mother, stepfather, three brothers and one sister.

U.S. and North Carolina flags will be lowered to half-staff beginning Monday until sunset Sunday to honor Moore.

No other details have been released at this point.
