Obama, Romney to square off in first of three debates

DENVER, CO. — President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney are making final preparations for Wednesday night's debate.

The two men, who will square off at the University of Denver, could set the tone for the final weeks leading up to the election.

The debate is the first of three and comes with a lot of pressure.

The latest ABC News, Washington Post poll shows the race is very tight.

Wednesday's debate will focus on the economy and domestic policy.

Romney has had more recent experience debating.  He was part of several during the primary season.

Obama has not debated since 2008.  Sen. John Kerry has been helping him prepare.

Both men are downplaying expectations.  They said it is just about the American people getting a chance to hear their views.

"In my view, it's not so much about winning and losing or even the people themselves.  The president and myself, it's about something bigger than that," Romney said.

"Gov. Romney is a good debater.  I'm just OK," said Obama.

Both candidates have spent some time getting to know their opponent, his views and style.

One interesting fact to know, according to Obama campaign records, the two men have only met three times.

Before the presidential debate, the candidates for North Carolina governor will debate.

Pat McCrory and Walter Dalton are scheduled to debate at 7 p.m. in Raleigh.
