Officials: 16 found after being scattered during storm on lake

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — York County officials said 16 people who went unaccounted for on Lake Wylie have been found.

Around 4 p.m. Thursday, the 16 people were in the water on a sandbar on the North Carolina side of the lake. A severe storm came up over Lake Wylie and trapped the swimmers. Rescue crews were called and were able to find all 16.

One of the swimmers said it was like being on the ocean. A swimmer did go underwater for a short period of time.

"It came so quick," said swimmer Mattie Scutella. "We just tried to get to the nearest boat we could and find all of our friends."

Charlotte Fire Department was able to get boats to the scene and bring the swimmers to the Buster Boyd Landing in South Carolina.

Officials said one person was taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries.
