MONROE, N.C. — Union County sheriff's deputies said a man may have drowned in a pond behind a home Saturday afternoon in Union County.
Crews are investigating the death of 34-year-old Jose Alfonso Gomez that occurred in the 3600 block of Harrington Quick Road in Monroe.
When Emergency Medical Service responders arrived, they found Gomez on the shore of the pond.
He was pronounced dead after resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
Investigators said a neighbor found Gomez floating in the pond and pulled him out before first responders showed up.
