Two people shot in hallway of uptown Charlotte hotel

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating after two people were shot inside the Le Meridian Hotel in uptown Charlotte Friday night.

Channel 9 anchor Allison Latos was first to report that her sources with the police department told her a person had been shot, but they did not say how seriously the person was injured.

CMPD later revealed that person had been shot twice and was in serious but stable condition at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center. A second person some minor damage to one of their ears after being grazed by a bullet, authorities said.

CMPD initially detained a person of interest in the case, but later determined that person was not the suspect in the shooting.

The shooting appears to have taken place in a hallway inside the hotel, police said. They do not have a motive for the shooting at this time, but later said the suspect and the shooter apparently knew one another.

Officers are working the area to interview witnesses.

Latos also learned it was a member of hotel security who made the 911 call about the shooting.

Chopper 9 SkyZoom flew over a second scene nearby, where police officers could be seen loading a person into the back of an ambulance. This was near the intersection of 3rd Street and the John Belk Freeway.

CMPD confirmed to Channel 9 that a second victim was located running near this intersection. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of a minor ear wound that appeared to be caused by a bullet grazing him, police said.

No arrests have been made in this case.

Channel 9 spoke to some guests checking in to the hotel when this scene unfolded and how they were feeling coming into the city and hotel.

"They had shut down all elevators and tons of police went up," witness Andrew Wilburn said. "I think it was the 6th floor and then abut five minutes later, we saw someone coming out on a stretcher.

Police said they are sending extra patrols in the area after the shooting to help keep guests at ease.
