Parents: 1-year-old returns home after burned in fire

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — Kayln and James Miller and their four children are staying with family Wednesday, a week after losing nearly everything they had inside their Lenoir home.

The couple says the most important thing is their children. The youngest, Domanick, spent the last eight days hospitalized after receiving second-degree burns.

"He's doing really, really good. He's up walking and playing and doing everything else," said Kayln Miller.

"When I first went down there he wouldn't even let me touch him. Nothing for the first two days. And now he is up running around playing with everybody loving everybody," said James Miller.

Kayln got the boys out after Domanick's older brother woke to the fire and alerted his mom. Fire investigators believe it started near either an electrical heater or a lava lamp. James Miller was working out of the area.

"Coming from an hour and a half away at work to find out your house is on fire and your wife and kids are there. That is the scariest thought ever," James Miller said.

Since the fire, people the couple have never met before have provided clothes and other items for the boys.

The Caldwell County Chapter of the N.C. Firefighters' Burned Children's Fund will give the family a $500 gift card Thursday to help them as they look for a new place to live.

"I'm thankful for those firefighters. I love every single one of them," James Miller said.

"I'm honestly just so thankful that there are so many people supporting us and that care enough," Kayln Miller said.
