Parents hope to sway leaders in CMS student assignment plan

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Stephanie Arnette-Newson is one of many Morehead STEM Academy parents who will face Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools leaders Monday night.

The school board will vote Wednesday on the controversial student assignment plan.

"We're still here,” Arnette-Newson said. “We're still begging for them to try something different than what's proposed."

Some parents are frustrated over the plan to break up the successful magnet program, and they're putting in last-ditch efforts to sway the CMS Board of Education.

"We can do something very different to accomplish these goals rather than building up these extremely phenomenal successful schools, and then tearing them down," Arnette-Newson said.

They're not alone in their concern.

Those in the Alexander Graham Middle School community will also meet Monday over proposed changes, and board members said they're listening.

"Keep trying, keep working at it," CMS board member Paul Bailey said.

Bailey said parents will likely see changes to the proposal based off of this last week of feedback.

"It's not too late," he said. "I think most people feel like things like this are a done deal, but I don't believe that until the vote is taken. The final will be when we vote. And remember, the changes could be made at the dais."
